Samsung Galaxy Note 4 vs. iPhone 5S – Future vs. Current Flagship

The Samsung Galaxy Note 4 is rumored to arrive in September 2014 at the Berlin IFA trade show. As we are getting closer and closer to this date we expect that more and more information will surface about Samsung’s new flagship. The iPhone 5s is one of the best and most popular device on the market right now and it will be a worthy opponent of the Samsung Note 4 once it’s released.

Design

What we know so far about the Note 4 is based only on rumors and leaks, so these details might change over the next few months. The biggest difference between the two will be their size. The Samsung Galaxy Note 4 is expected to be as big as its predecessor if not even bigger.

The iPhone 5s has premium design, it looks great, it’s slim and easy to use with on hand, and that makes it one of the most sought after device on the market. Rumors suggest that Samsung might change their well know plastic design, found on the Samsung S5 and Note 3, to something new for their upcoming device. Some suggest that the new Samsung Galaxy Note 4 might get a three-sided display; something that might give it an edge over the iPhone 5s and also other current devices.

Samsung did not change much in the design of their top devices the past; it will be interesting to see if the company will be willing to come up with something fresh. The Samsung Note 4 as its predecessors will come out with the S Pen, further expanding on its features.

Specification

The Samsung Galaxy Note 4 is expected to be the most powerful device on the market from Samsung. So far, rumors suggest that the Note 4 will come out with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 octa-core 64-bit processor and 4GB of RAM. It may also come with up to 128GB of storage and microSD support. That should provide plenty of power for all types of users. The iPhone 5s has the best that Apple can offer right now in terms of hardware capability, using a very efficient 64-bit A7 processor, 1GB of LPDDR3 RAM and 16/32/64GB of internal storage. The Galaxy Note 4 might look better equipped but the iPhone 5s well optimized and power efficient.

While the camera on the iPhone 5s is a powerful 8MP sensor with lots of features, the Note 4 is expected to come equipped with a 20 MP camera capable of 4K video recordings. If the rumors will prove to be true, the Note 4 will have a distant advantage over the iPhone 5s. Battery wise the Samsung Galaxy Note 4 will probably house a 3600-3800 mAh unit. The iPhone 5s comes with a smaller, 1570mAh cell but given its smaller screen size and power efficient components it should perform similar to the Note 4.

Display

The iPhone 5s was considered to have the best display for a while. Now it seems that the S5 has stolen this title, so it’s safe to assume that the Note 4 will probably outperform Apple’s Retina display. Rumors suggest that the Samsung Galaxy Note 4 will have an even better screen than the S5. Samsung might equip the Note 4 with a QHD display offering 2560 x 1440 resolution.

The Galaxy Note was always famous for having bigger and bigger displays. Samsung might go on with the trend and give the Note 4 an even bigger display or upgrade it with something unique. New patent filings suggest a three-sided “curved” display might make an appearance on future Samsung devices, and it might start with the Note 4. It’s safe to assume that the Note 4 will have at least a 5.7-inch QHD display if the company decides that the current Note 3 is big enough and enlarging it further will make it more a tablet than a phone. If it will also come with a curved thee-sided display it remains to be seen.

Software

When it comes to the OS, the two are very distinct from each other. We know that the iPhone 5s uses the iOS 7 and we can speculate that the Note 4 will come out with the latest Android coupled with Samsung’s TouchWiz UI. The iOS 7 has tons of apps available for it tough the Apple’s App Store, it’s also very user friendly.  Android is more flexible and customizable to fit the needs of its user. One big advantage that the Note 4 might have over the iPhone 5s is its S Pen stylus. Its unknown what improvements will the S Pen’s new software bring but Samsung always tries to make it better and more functional with every new Note device.

Conclusion

This might not look like a fair comparison as the Note 4 is not even out yet and the iPhone 5s is already getting old. Unless the iPhone 6 will make an appearance before the Note 4, the 5s will be the only competitor from Apple. The Samsung Galaxy Note 4 will probably have the best hardware and software that current technology has to offer, making it an obvious choice for user who want a smartphone with the latest tech. For users who can’t part with Apple’s iOS will have to stick to their iPhone 5s for now and wait until the iPhone 6 makes its appearance.
