Will Mortal Kombat X Feature Destructible Environments?

As we may all know, Mortal Kombat X is in production for quite some time now, but recently it has been announced with a ballistic trailer. We can not only see the iconic Scorpion engaging in a brutal combat with his arch enemy, Sub-Zero, but we can also deduce that the video is extremely gameplay-like. If we take a closer look to how the two characters swirl around the forest in which they execute their bombastic combos, we can see that at certain points, they hit each other with twigs, they roll around doing vertical 360-degree kicks using the trees and so on.

Logically, if we think back, Mortal Kombat 9 was a near-perfect incarnation and an indubitable holder of the golden medal of Mortal Kombat. In order to improve on the already near-perfect aspect of Mortal Kombat 9 (which was released for the PC too in 2013), developers may have considered adding a little bit of twist to the infamous fighting game and tease us a little with it through the trailer. Whilst most of the classic abilities were preserved such as Scorpion’s harpoon, infernal teleport, fiery kick, searing punch and Sub-Zero’s ice blast, a more brutal way of finishing off enemies seems to have been implemented – this is very visible towards the end of the trailer, where the head of the defeated hangs on a tree. This may lead to the speculation whether the developers decided to implement player-specific, level-based fatalities as opposed to the old stage fatality types where all the characters did the same thing, when the “Finish Him/Her” sounded.

Destructible terrain would most surely add a certain kind of flavor to the Mortal Kombat universe as it has not really been successfully implemented before. Certain attempts were made with Mortal Kombat 4, Mortal Kombat – Armageddon, and so on, but none of these actually made a lasting appeal. This is proved by the fact that 2011’s Mortal Kombat 9 returned to the semi-2D movement of the characters and eliminated stage-based hazards that could befall the unfortunate player. Considering the insurmountable success of Mortal Kombat 9, it is only fair to be hoping for a brutal, bloody, catchy, notorious, deadly and hazardous Mortal Kombat X. Environmental hazards, whether they are present or not, are yet to be revealed, but the teaser looks nonetheless like a dead giveaway.
