Star Citizen introduces the Freelancer line-up

The Freelancer line-up consists of a new series of MISC Freelancer ships that were introduced to Star Citizen today. Featuring a variety of models, the MISC Freelancer is a rugged starship most suitable for the exploration and shipping roles. “Freelancers are used as long haul merchant ships by major corporations, but they are just as frequently repurposed and dedicated exploration vessels by independent captains who want to operate on the fringes of the galaxy”. The name MISC stands for Musashi Industrial & Starflight Concern who are well-known for producing efficient middle-of-the-road transport ships. These new models are meant to shows backers of the Star Citizen project what they can do with ship upgrades and mods in the finished world.

One of the variants is the Freelancer DUR, a dedicated space exploration ship. Others, like the Freelancer MAX are more suitable for heavy cargo transportation. Last but not least, we have the Freelancer MIS, a combat starship that was primarily designed for the UEE military, but can now be used by civilian pilots as well. All of these models can already be found in the Star Citizen hangar. Backers are not able to dogfight them yet, but they can use the ships for exploration purposes. Cloud Imperium Games mentions that while you can donate to receive these ships now, the Freelancer line-up will be available to all player once Star Citizen is released. The goal here is to offer variety to backers and raise some more funds for the development process.

The company created a special brochure, which gives us an in-dept look at these new starships. The brochure reveals that the Freelancer was built in 2944 to be a versatile transport vessel. The ship features MISC’s XTENSION flight system and Fovea display technology. “We are pleased to reveal the 2944 Freelancer. MISC continues its dedication to refining the best mid-sized commercial transport vessel on the market while offering the versatility to outfit the ship for exploration or even combat. Our engineers have collected raw data from our loyal customers to understand exactly what they want in the new Freelancer. You will find that our engines have achieved the peak efficiency for their size, class and model.”

If I didn’t know Star Citizen was a game, I could have sworn that I was reading the brochure for a real product. Cloud Imperium seems to be putting a lot of work in even the smallest details. If they keep this up we’ll be looking at a real masterpiece once the game is finished.
