The Banner Saga could be coming to consoles

Stoic Games is looking to bring The Banner Saga to consoles in the future. The developer, which is currently working on bringing the critically acclaimed tactical role-playing game to mobile devices, is planning a console release according to an interview with Digital Spy.  While not stating what platforms they would be working on programmer John Watson did say: “The ideal would be to get some console ports out before the end of the year. Whether we can make that happen or not, I don’t know.”

The developer also confirmed that they also wanted to release The Banner Saga on the PS Vita. “Some things are easier than others. I think the game would be great on Vita, but I think that would come after other consoles,” said Watson. “It’s a path of least resistance thing; there’s [only] three of us.” However, he did explain though that a release would likely have to wait until after the other console versions as they would have to separately work on incorporating the touch and normal controls on the Vita.

The Banner Saga is set in a fantasy world that takes inspiration from Viking mythology. It sees players attempt to take on an army of Dredge as they look for potential weaknesses and ty to slow the enemy advance. Fighting takes the form of turn-based combat with a caravan of units that have wide ranging abilities. Unusually, losing a battle does not end the game, instead it continues to play with the loss having consequences on the wider world.

A trio of independent developers formed Stoic Games after they left BioWare created the game. They had previously worked on high profile titles such as Star Wars: The Old Republic. Funds for development were crowd funded using Kickstarter, where the project was very successful, reaching its goal after only a day. The Banner Saga is currently available for Windows and Mac. It can be bought from a number of digital distribution services such as Steam, GoG.com and GamersGate. The mobile version of the game will be releasing sometime this summer.
