Sony reveals sales data for their recent PlayStation consoles

Sony has revealed that they have sold over 100 million PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4 and PS Vita consoles. While the Japanese company does not usually give out data about the sales of their products, they announced the numbers in a promotional video for the PlayStation brand. The PlayStation 3 accounts for most of that 100 million, with Sony having previously stated that the console had sole around 80 million units. Exact sales data isn’t known for the PlayStation 4 and PS Vita, but is it known that the next generation console has moved at least 7 million units. The PS Vita has widely been seen as a commercial failure, failing to sell as well as the PlayStation Portable.

The total sales across those three devices still lag far behind the immensely successful PlayStation 2. The console, which first released in 2000, went on to sell more than 155 million units. The original PlayStation was also hugely successful, shipping 102 million consoles worldwide. This means that Sony have now sold over 350 million consoles across all of their platforms, putting them far ahead of the likes of Microsoft who have only managed to sell around 100 million consoles across the Xbox 360, Xbox One and original Xbox. Sony will be expecting the PlayStation 4 to move more units in the coming months. High profile releases such as Destiny will no doubt help to convince gamers to pick up the console.

Nintendo still leads the way in overall sales for consoles. Six of their consoles are in the list of best-selling platforms of all time, due in part to their huge success in the handheld market. Combining the sales of the Gameboy, Game Boy Advance, Nintendo DS, Nintendo 3DS, NES, SNES, Nintendo 64 and Gamecube puts Nintendo far in front with an estimated total of over 550 million units. However, their latest offering, the Wii U, is currently struggling commercially and has sold less than the PlayStation 4, despite having a one year advantage.
