id Software reveals DOOM gameplay at QuakeCon 2014

id Software presented the first gameplay footage of DOOM at QuakeCon 2014, just like they promised earlier this year. This latest entry doesn’t have any subtitle or number attached to it so it’s just simply called DOOM, a fact that might confuse some people given that the original game also has that name. The original title is one of the first shooters I ever played and I’m sure many of you can say the same. As you can image, the 2014 version’s graphics are miles ahead of the 1993 one’s, but the creators have managed to preserve the atmosphere of the series in such a way that you can tell from the get-go that you are looking at a Doom game and not some spin-off.

Unfortunately no recording of any kind was allowed during the presentation so there are no gameplay videos anywhere at the moment. The demo starts outside the Union Aerospace Corporation research facility on Mars as it is being invaded by demons pouring out through a portal from Hell. A lot of familiar enemies can be spotted during the gameplay footage including revenants, cyberdemons, and hellknights among others. Classic Doom weapons are also making a comeback and the demo starts off with the player wielding the all too familiar double-barrell shotgun, but is also seen firing the rocket launcher and plasma rifle. Your trusty melee weapon, the chainsaw, also returns and is now more efficient and brutal than ever.

DOOM is being developed using the in-house idTech 6 engine and will be running at 1080p resolution and 60 frames per second on all systems. It’s a good thing too as everyone should enjoy all the gore and visceral combat in high definition regardless of platform. Gameplay-wise, I’m happy to say that this will be an classic shooter that will feature old school mechanics. This means no regenerating health and no reloading your clip, you’ll need to pick up health and ammo from the ground in classic fashion. Also, you can carry as many weapons as you want and there is no cover system. Veteran FPS gamers will surely appreciate the return of these mechanics that made classic shooters rather difficult, but at the same time much more enjoyable than modern ones.

There was no announcement in regards to a launch date, but rumor has it that the official video will be released during Gamescon so perhaps we’ll find out then. DOOM will be available for PS4, Xbox One, and the PC.
