Samsung Galaxy Mega 2 unveiled by retailer

The Galaxy Mega 2’s existence has been revealed a while ago, and it was supposed to be unveiled at IFA Berlin in September. But leaks have occurred from Asian retailers, eluding the mystery around the Galaxy Mega 2 phablet. The retailers have also managed to take decent photos of the device, showing a removable back plate and battery.

The Galaxy Mega 2 is an upcoming mid-range Samsung phablet which will cater to users who enjoy big screens but don’t need the extra functions flagships like the Galaxy S5 or HTC One M8 offer. The leak confirms some of the specs we’ve heard about so far, such as a 6 inch display. The device will be powered by a quad-core 1.4GHz Exynos 4415 CPU with 1.5GB RAM. It will sport an 8 MP rear camera and Android 4.4.4 with TouchWiz pre-installed. These specs are rather mid-range, but we expected that from the Galaxy Mega 2. Older leaks suggested a Snapdragon 400 CPU, but seeing the Exynos one incorporated is an upgrade.

We’ve previously thought that the rear camera on the Galaxy Mega 2 will be a 12 or 13 MP one, but 8 MP are enough, too. We would have liked to see an improvement here, but since the phablet is targeted at a different type of audience, it’s not a problem. Its chassis isn’t spectacular either, but that doesn’t come as a surprise coming from Samsung.

The phablet is now fully revealed and it has even been put up for sale on Asian retail sites. The Galaxy Mega 2 will be officially announced at IFA Berlin, but there’s little chance that any of these specs will change. Retail price for the phablet is around $450, which is an acceptable price for a fairly competent device, although it might be overshadowed by Samsung’s own Galaxy Note 4. The estimated price is for Asian markets, so we are not sure how much we will have to scrape up for the Mega 2 when it is released in the U.S.

The phablet does have an elegant finish with threading on the sides, which looks appealing. The matte finish of the chassis also looks good and might feel good in the hand. A removable battery, back plate and microSD card slot are definitely a plus for the phablet, which will make it desirable for those who choose to incorporate their tablet into their phone and don’t need monster specs to do it. You can check it out in the photos below from DroidSans, who did the original report and tell us what you think about the phablet.

Considering the fact that I've rapidly destroyed almost every gadget I've had so far, I'm not inclined to owning something, so my ideal outcome would be to have a different gadget each month. I'm really into smartphones, wearables and tablets and I love Playstation and Xbox, I'm sure I'll beat you at your own game (after a month of training... or two)
