Assassin’s Creed: Unity dev explains why the game can’t be released on the Wii U

Assassin’s Creed: Unity creative director Alex Amancio explained why the game will not be released on the Wii U or on any last gen console.

During an interview he gave to Red Bull’s gaming blog, Amancio motivated why Assassin’s Creed: Unity is an exclusively next-gen title in the series. It features improvements over the previous games and elements that are beyond the capabilities of the last-gen consoles or of Nintendo’s Wii U console. He goes on arguing that the scale of the game and the fact that the people in the crowd  have a great impact in the game, make it impossible for these consoles to handle Assassin’s Creed: Unity.

“It couldn’t, it really couldn’t”, he said, “I mean this is why we from the beginning, this was going to be a new-gen-only title, because the crowds aren’t aesthetic, they actually have impact. If we did anything to hinder that or to reduce that it would have a detrimental impact, it wouldn’t be the same experience. I don’t think that would be fair to fans, to sell the same game but with different levels of experience. Even the seamless nature of the series and the scale of the game right, we couldn’t do that. We never load Paris. It wouldn’t be possible, in our minds we’d be cheating fans by providing a lesser version of the same game.”

Bottom line, the game is too big and the developers don’t want to scale it down for the sake of gamers who are still playing on older consoles. However, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 gamers will receive an alternative to Unity, in form of “Assassin’s Creed: Rogue”. Nintendo Wii U users, on the other side, will have to accept that they will not be able to play any Assassin’s Creed game on their console this year. This comes after Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot stated that the publisher won’t release any more Assassin’s Creed titles on the Wii U because of the low sales, focusing instead on bringing Nintendo fans different kinds of games such as “Just Dance”.

About Crisan Mircea

I'm a journalism graduate and an occasional gamer. As a kid I used to own a NES clone called "Terminator 2", which was hugely popular in my country. I like old school games and adventure games but I occasionaly play RPG's and Shooters as well, though I wouldn't call myself an expert at these kinds of games. When I'm not writing or playing games I prefer reading detective or fantasy novels.
