Sony Xperia flagships spotted running Android 5.0 Lollipop

Android Lollipop is on everybody’s lips right now. Samsung is preparing its own, brand new TouchWiz version of Android 5.0 Lollipop, while the Nexus devices are set to receive the stock version of Google’s new mobile OS on November 12. When Google announced Android 5.0 Lollipop, Sony was quick to make their own announcement about the Sony Xperia smartphone line. As per Sony, most Xperia flagships will benefit from Android Lollipop as quickly as possible.

Sony said that the Xperia Z, Xperia Z1, Xperia Z2 and Xperia Z3 smartphones, as well as tablets in the line will be treated to the Android Lollipop update within 90 days of its release. Sony has already announced that it would be releasing an Android 5.0 Lollipop closed beta to a select few customers so that they can have the opportunity to try out the new OS on their Xperia devices. According to most reports, the final version of Android 5.0 Lollipop will be ready for the Xperia Z3 and Xperia Z3 Compact, as well as other devices from Sony early in 2015. In the meantime, the company has also revealed that the AOSP version of Lollipop is also ready to run on Xperia Z1, Z2 and Z3 devices.

The AOSP or Android Open Source Project version of Lollipop is not a very user friendly variant of the OS. Its main purpose is to allow developers to create custom Android ROMs and work with the new OS. It’s not a user friendly version because it lacks features like a dialer, messaging apps and more things that are elementary features for a smartphone or a tablet. Nonetheless, it is nice to see that Sony is getting developers involved in the Android 5.0 Lollipop treatment process and if you are a developer, you will surely be glad to get your hands on the AOSP.
