Microsoft Surface Pro 3 vs MacBook Air 13″ 2014: ultrabook or convertible?

The Microsoft Surface Pro 3 is one of the best and most expensive convertible devices on the market, launched to positive reviews and few issues with overheating and bugs. Even though the Microsoft Surface Pro 3 is really expensive, going over the $1000 mark by a wide margin, the convertible is one of the best options out there for enterprises as well as people with a flair for powerful hardware. The price-point doesn’t mean that it’s the best gadget you can get, though, since the MacBook Air 13″ 2014 is one of the biggest competitors against the Microsoft Surface Pro 3, even though it’s not a competitor. That should demonstrate that a convertible can be as powerful as an ultrabook nowadays.

The Microsoft Sufrace Pro 3 design is edgy and slim and is currently the slimmest i5 PC ever made. It weighs just 1.76 pounds without the keyboard case, which is amazing for a convertible device. The Microsoft Surface Pro 3 encompasses the power of a laptop in a tablet form, which makes it one of the most portable convertible devices on the market. For those of you who would like to upgrade your laptop but would rather have something that is infinitely more portable than the average laptop, the Microsoft Surface Pro 3 performance and design will be an impressive choice to make. The problem with the Microsoft Surface Pro 3 is that its kickstand is a bit small for lap-use and its 13 inch display is a bit small compared to other ultrabooks on the market. Nonetheless, if these shortcomings don’t bother you, the Microsoft Surface Pro 3 should be perfect.

The MacBook Air design is classic and iconic, representative of Apple devices, with the same metal finish and premium feel as the Microsoft Surface Pro 3. The MacBook Air is a bit heavier than the Surface Pro 3, weighing almost 3 pounds. It’s still a pretty lightweight ultrabook which won’t be a burden on your back or shoulder, depending on the bag of choice. Even though the MacBook Air design is classic and iconic, it still feels a bit dated since the design hasn’t changed for years now. For Apple fans, it might be a turn-off to see the same repetitive design ieven if they upgrade, but for those of you for whom the MacBook Air would be the first Apple computer, the design should seem fresh.

The Microsoft Surface Pro 3 stands out with its 2160*1440 screen resolution, which compared to the MacBook Air 1440*900 resolution seems brighter and sharper. The fact that the Microsoft Surface Pro 3 has a touchscreen should be a plus for many of you, since you can use the device as a tablet and as a laptop at the same time. The Microsoft Surface Pro 3 features a keyboard which has a pretty responsive trackpad and a stylus which can come in handy for design and photography manipulation, as well as other graphics porgrams and drawing software. The fact that the Microsoft Surface Pro 3 is compatible with all Windows software is definitely a pro feature of the convertible, since it allows you to use it as a fully fledged laptop instead of a limited tablet.

Both the MacBook Air and Microsoft Surface Pro 3 include SD card slots, HDMI adapters, backlit keyboards and Bluetooth 4.1. When it comes to the Microsoft Surface Pro 3 performance and specs, we can list a 1.9 GHz Core i5 CPU with 8 GB RAM. The MacBook Air specs include a 1.4 GHz Core i5 CPU with 4 GB RAM, which is a bit inferior, as you can see. The higher-end hardware in the Microsoft Surface Pro 3 makes for a slightly better performance than the MacBook Air’s, which means it offers a bit more to the average user. Nonetheless, depending on the test, the MacBook Air can outperform the Microsoft Surface Pro 3, especially when it comes to multimedia multitasking.

The MacBook Air battery life is impressive, being able to score around 10 hours on a video drain test, while the Microsoft Surface Pro 3 could only manage half that. The Microsoft Surface Pro 3 battery life is a minus for the device, since it will influence your daily routine – having to charge it at least once a day. The MacBook Air on the other hand, can rack up about 16 hours of battery life on an average day, which means it takes the lead when it comes to battery life.

The Microsoft Surface Pro 3 price for the Core i3 CPU is $800, while the i5  CPU version with 128 GB internal storage will set you back $1000 at least. If you want the Surface Pro 3 with the type cover, you will have to add another $130, because they are sold separately, which is a drawback in my mind. That raises your cost for the basic i5 version to $1130, which is a bit of a hefty price. The Apple MacBook Air price starts at $1000, which gets you great value compared to other laptops in its price range. Overall, the Microsoft Surface Pro 3 pays for itself with versatility, but it sacrifices a bit of battery life and performance while doing so. Nonetheless, if you’re for a versatile device which you can use in more than one way, the Microsoft Surface Pro 3 should be ideal for you. On the other hand, if you are content with a simpler laptop, than the MacBook Air will offer you great value and performance and will outlast most other laptops in its price range.

Considering the fact that I've rapidly destroyed almost every gadget I've had so far, I'm not inclined to owning something, so my ideal outcome would be to have a different gadget each month. I'm really into smartphones, wearables and tablets and I love Playstation and Xbox, I'm sure I'll beat you at your own game (after a month of training... or two)
