PlayStation Store Update 12.16.14

Every Tuesday the PlayStation Store Update is released and a ton of new content is published for your PlayStation 4, 3 and Vita. The data dump includes digital versions of retail games, smaller downloadable titles, demos, pre-orders, sales, apps, DLC and more. Instead of combing through the heap of text and pictures, let us guide you to what deserves your attention and money. Without further rambling, here is the PlayStation Store update 12.16.14.

PlayStation 4

Guilty Gear Xrd- SIGN– the fifth installment in Arc System Works’ bestselling and critically acclaimed fighter, this entry features cel shaded graphics instead of the standard hand drawn 2D sprites. This has been out in arcades for quite some time now but is now finally making its way to home consoles exclusively on PlayStation systems, specifically the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 3.

Loadout– A third person shooter developed by Edge of Reality who are based in Boston, this title is a bit over the top when it comes to humor and gore. That cartoon-inspired theme is also featured in the wealth of customization options available for players to create a one of a kind avatar to use in-game. Like Guilty Gear, this was released on another platform earlier this year, PC actually, and is now debuting on consoles exclusively on the PlayStation 4.

Tetris Ultimate– basically Tetris with trophies, some multiplayer competitive modes and uh, yeah. That’s about it.

PlayStation 3

Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots– This was the “finale” of the Metal Gear Solid franchise and was very divisive upon release, as most critical outlets praised it but recent years have seen the game criticized for the overly long cutscenes and convoluted gameplay. Now it’s available digitally and packs trophies which were heavily rumored to be coming to the game for years. Unfortunately the online portion has been dead since 2012.

PlayStation Vita

Oddworld Munch’s Oddysee– Originally an Xbox title, this game was brought to the PlayStation 3 as an HD port, developed by Just Add Water. It was announced to be coming to the PlayStation Vita at E3 2011 and is now finally being released to no fanfare. You can also cross save the title with the PlayStation 3 version if that is your thing.

This week’s most offensive addition is a group of Dynamic Themes for $2.99. Now you see themes are this optional thing you can use on your PlayStation 3 to make the backgrounds different images and change up the icons. However with these themes you get a minimal .GIF image and no major changes to the icons. And they want you to pay $3 for it? Do something more than simply have the flames in the background move a few centimeters and maybe you would get some money!

This week’s recommendation is Hotline Miami on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 3 or PlayStation Vita, although I believe the title is most at home on the PlayStation Vita. That game has a kicking soundtrack (wear headphones) and at only $3! What a steal!
