Xperia Z3 and Xperia Z3 Compact Lollipop update rolling out in February

The Sony Xperia Z3 and Xperia Z3 Compact should be the first ones in Sony’s line-up to receive Android 5.0 Lollipop with the company’s UI on top. At CES 2015, the company confirmed that the update would start its rollout to all “premium” Xperia Z devices, but since the rollout will be done in stages, the latest of smartphones should be the first ones to receive Android 5.0 Lollipop

The soak test of the  software is reportedly finished, according to diligent developers and testers who have already received Android 5.0 Lollipop on their Xperia Z3 and Z3 Compact handsets. While Sony didn’t give an exact date of when Android 5.0 Lollipop will begin its initial rollout, they did confirm that sometime in the first two weeks of February, users of the Xperia Z3 should start receiving the OTA in the UK and Europe. Take that info with a grain of salt, as we’re not positive that the initial release of the update will focus on Europe. For all we know, we could be wrong and US Xperia Z3 owners could be the first ones getting the Lollipop treatment.

Techies on forums are getting very excited about Android 5.0 Lollipop, but many are wondering whether Sony will release the 5.0 build to the Xperia Z3 and Z3 Compact or if they will release an upgraded version, either 5.0.1 or 5.0.2. There is silence on Sony’s end and they haven’t disclosed any information since CES 2015, so this must be the calm before the storm, so to speak. If you are anxious to have Lollipop on the Xperia Z3 or the Xperia z3 Compact, you can head over to the XDA Developers forums because you can find a handful of custom ROMs to choose from based on Android 5.0 Lollipop. One other option is CyanogenMod 12 ROM, which is based on Android 5.0.2 Lollipop. You can flash these ROMs on various Xperia devices, as long as you have some basic knowledge about flashing and rooting your phone, depending on the case.
