Best Buy is canceling some preorders for the Limited Edition Zelda New 3DS XL

Several users on NeoGAF, Reddit, and Zelda Informer are claiming that Best Buy is canceling their preorders and issuing refunds for the Limited Edition Legend of Zelda Majora’s Mask New 3DS XL if they ordered more than one. It would seem that this is Best Buy’s way of combating scalpers as the Limited Edition handheld that is releasing in North America on February 13th, was sold out within hours of going on sale at GameStop, and Best Buy. Soon after this, many of these “additional” Majora’s Mask New 3DS XLs were spotted selling on eBay for more than $400, leaving many fans out in the cold. The handheld is currently not listed on Best Buy’s website as of this writing, and it may be that you will have to physically go to a brick and mortar location to see if they will allow you to purchase one.

Some consumers are infuriated by this, claiming that this business practice is unfair and just because they bought several of these limited release consoles for their brother-in laws and nieces, they shouldn’t be the ones being punished for this. However, according to Best Buy’s Conditions of Use, they are able to do just that:

“Our order confirmation to you does not signify our acceptance of your order, nor does it constitute confirmation of our offer to sell. At any time after receipt of your order, we may accept, decline, or place quantity or other limits on your order for any reason. We may impose these limits on a per-person, per-household, per-order, or any other basis. If we reject, limit, or otherwise modify your order, we will attempt to notify you using the e-mail address you provide to us. If we cancel an order or part of an order that we’ve already charged you for, we’ll refund you the full amount of the canceled portion of the order.”

In the end, it really is the only way to make sure that scalpers aren’t purchasing multiple consoles and selling them for double of what they are listed for.

On Tuesday GameStop required that all previous preorders that held a $50 deposit on the device be paid in full by the end of the day. If not purchased by then, the consumer was to be refunded and the handheld would then go back up for sale. It is uncertain at this time if GameStop will follow in the same footsteps of Best Buy as this may be one of the better ways to combat this long running issue.

It’s no secret that the handheld itself will become difficult to find down the road, as many Limited Edition Legend of Zelda themed consoles have become rather valuable over the years. I am still kicking myself for not purchasing the limited edition 3DS Ocarina of Time console as it was an absolute thing of beauty. Hopefully if you didn’t get an opportunity to preorder the Majora’s Mask New 3DS XL before, now is your chance.
