Xperia Z4 rumor round-up: release date and specs

The Sony Xperia Z4 is supposedly the next upcoming flagship from the company and we’ve got a pile of rumors to go through. Since we can’t accurately predict what a phone will look like or what kind of hardware it will boast with until the company confirms at least the release date of the Xperia Z4, we though a nice rumor round-up would be in order so that we can get an idea of what the flagship will bring to the table once it launches.

The Xperia Z4 release date is most likely set for March, once the MWC kicks off. Previous leaks involving product placement in the upcoming Bond movie entitled Spectre, put the release date of the Xperia Z4 between May and November, but the tech community so far is refusing to believe that Sony would launch the phone so late. That’s because MWC is the place where many other OEMs will launch their own flagships, like the Galaxy S6, HTC One M9 and LG G4. Arriving so late to competition this fierce might not be a good thing for the company.

When it comes to specs and display, the Xperia Z4 might come in two different variants, as usual: the original Z4 and the Z4 Compact. The Xperia Z4 should be the more endowed of the two and rumors say it will come with a 5.5 inch QHD display. The Xperia Z4 Compact is shaping up, once again, to become the more popular variant, as it will have the same 5.2 inch (5.3 tops) display with a 1080p resolution. People are rooting for the latter because the inferior display would contribute to battery life immensely, whereas the larger, QHD display would just eat away all that power.

Other internals in the Xperia Z4 should include the Qualcomm Snapdragon 810 CPU, backed by a whopping 4 GB RAM (maybe 3 GB). We don’t think Sony will stray too much when it comes to storage configuration, but it’s not unlikely to see a handset with 128 GB internal storage, like the iPhone 6 or 6 Plus. The handset will definitely be waterproof and will come with an upgraded 20 MP rear camera with optical stabilization, most likely. The battery pack should come close to 4000 mAh, especially if Sony wants to use a QHD display.

Even though the Xperia Z4 isn’t actually confirmed and we’re still not sure if the release date we proposed is viable, but it is currently the most likely scenario. If we don’t see the handset at the MWC this year, we might be looking at a May release date, as the Spectre-leak pointed out. Most fans are hoping that the Xperia Z4 line-up makes an appearance at the Mobile World Congress. Sony needs to up their game in the face of the competition, because their smartphone business hasn’t been too impressive lately.
