Galaxy S3 most likely passing up Lollipop

Android 5.0 Lollipop is the talk of the town among tech enthusiasts and especially Android and Samsung fans, and one of the most often asked questions is whether the Samsung Galaxy S3 will be getting the Android Lollipop update. That question is hard to answer, because the South Korean company doesn’t seem to respond to inquiries about the update, its schedule and the devices it is supposed to hit in the future. The Galaxy S3 is a pretty outdated smartphone and even though there are rumors that the device will be getting Android 5.0 Lollipop in the end, it is in fact, unlikely.

So far, many Samsung Galaxy devices are confirmed for Android 5.0 Lollipop, including the Galaxy S4, Galaxy S5, S5 Mini, Alpha, Galaxy Note 4, Note 3 and more, but no word on the Galaxy S3. From our point of view, the handset is sitting this one out and going into the realm of the forgotten. The Galaxy S3 is still at Android 4.3, and we’re not seeing Android 4.4.4 KitKat anywhere close, which means that Android 5.0 Lollipop won’t be coming to the handset too soon.

That doesn’t mean that if you own one of these handsets, you are out of the question and will be stuck with an outdated phone. You can always take advantage of custom ROMs, especially if you no longer have a warranty. The diligent developers at the XDA Developers forum have various ROMs based on Lollipop ready for the Galaxy S3, although most of them still don’t work as well as they do for newer smartphone models.

We can’t say for sure that the Galaxy S3 Android Lollipop update isn’t happening, but it seems to be the most likely outcome. If Samsung decides to update the older flagship, too, we wouldn’t expect it to happen ahead of April or May 2015. Until Samsung sends out an official statement about what’s happening with the Android 5.0 Lollipop update and which devices are scheduled to get it, we will have to go on pure speculation. We do hope that the Galaxy S3 does get Android 5.0 Lollipop, but we doubt it will. Don’t forget that you can get equal features and functions, as well as a Material Design overhaul with various custom ROMs.
