PlayStation Music is a Spotify Powered Music Service Coming Soon to PSN

Spotify will soon arrive on PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, and Sony Xperia smartphones and tablets, via a new service called PlayStation Music. Unfortunately, it looks like Vita users will be left out in the cold. In a post on the PlayStation Blog, Vice President of Sony Network Entertainment, Eric Lempel announced the new service which will be powered exclusively by Spotify. The service is scheduled to launch in the spring, in 41 markets globally. Countries confirmed to get access to PlayStation Music at launch include the U.S., Canada, Mexico, Austria, Portugal, UK, France, Germany, Spain, Italy and Brazil.

Prior to the launch of PlayStation Music, Sony will be shuttering its current music streaming service, Music Unlimited. While no official launch date for PlayStation Music has been provided, Sony stated that it’ll launch before Music Unlimited closes for good, on March 29th, 2015. Somewhat worryingly, Sony have also said that not all of the territories that currently have access to Music Unlimited will also have access to PlayStation Music when it launches.

Details are a little thin on the ground, but it sounds like you’ll be required to sign up for Spotify Premium in order to take advantage of the service. You’ll be able to link your current PlayStation Network account to Spotify, much like you can already with Twitter, YouTube and Facebook on PSN, which should help ease the process. “PlayStation Network users will enjoy the convenience of linking your accounts to Spotify, making it easy to sign-up with your existing ID and subscribe to Spotify’s Premium service,” said Lempel.

The new service will allow gamers access to their songs and existing Music Unlimited playlists during gameplay, with Sony promising access to a mammoth catalog. What if you’re already a Music Unlimited subscriber? Starting the 28th of February 2015, Music Unlimited users with active subscriptions will gain free access to Music Unlimited through 29th of March 2015.

With more than 30 million songs and 1.5 billion playlists, Spotify on PlayStation Music has it covered. As we get closer to launch we look forward to telling you about some of the other great features that will be available exclusively through Spotify on PlayStation Music.

We’ll have more as details emerge.
