Moto X 2013 soak test officially confirmed

Moto X 2013 Android 5.0.2 update set for release soon

The Moto X 2013 is going to receive the much-awaited Android 5.0.2 update soon, supposedly as soon as next week. Motorola‘s Luciano Carvalho took to Google+ to silence all the pesky messages and questions he had been getting about a purported soak test for the Moto X 2013. He made it pretty clear what Moto X 2013 owners should be waiting for and confirmed that the soak test for Android 5.0.2 on the device has begun, even though many already knew about it.

The fact that Carvalho confirmed that the Moto X 2013 update is going to be Android 5.0.2 and that it’s already being soak tested leads us to believe that the official release of the OTA update shouldn’t be far ahead. Although thinking that next week would already see the wide rollout of the update to first generation Moto X devices might be a bit too early, it’s definitely a possibility as we can’t say for sure when the soak test began or how long it will take. Usually, two weeks after the beginning of an update soak test, the official build will be released. Since we’re talking Lollipop, that date might be delayed in various regions as we’ve become accustomed to the staggered, slow rollout.

Android 5.0.2 Lollipop, although confirmed, is not the most recent version of the software that the Moto X 2013 update will contain. Android 5.1 is already out for Nexus devices and factory images are already live for the Nexus 5, Nexus 7 and Nexus 10, with more to be added soon. Judging by how Motorola handled the Lollipop updates since October, it would be safe to say that the Moto X 2014 and Moto G 2014 would be among the first phones to get Android 5.1 Lollipop, followed by the LG G3, HTC One M8, Galaxy S5 and the first generation Moto X and Moto G. Although many are happy with Lollipop as is, or even KitKat as is, it’s reassuring to hear from an official source that a new Moto X 2013 update is being tested and should be rolled out soon enough.

Carvalho mentioned Android 5.1 and disclosed that the company doesn’t have any plans for it yet. That reinforces the previous statement, although leaves us wondering whether Motorola has already received the build and began working on it or not. Our sources say that they did get the build from Google, but take that with a grain of salt. Voices are saying that the Moto X 2013 and its Moto G partner won’t be updated to Android 5.1, but we find that hard to believe seeing as the massive changelog for Android 5.1 is made up of mostly bug fixes that would be necessary for a smooth user experience. We don’t think Motorola or Google would skip that, so my advice would be to sit still, as it’s going to be released for the 2013 flagship Moto X, too.

My life-long dream has been to test out every gadget on the market! Considering the fact that I've rapidly destroyed almost every gadget I've had so far, I'm not inclined to owning something, so my ideal outcome would be to have a different gadget each month. I'm really into smartphones, wearables and tablets and I love Playstation and Xbox, I'm sure I'll beat you at your own game (after a month of training... or two)
