Steam Greenlight Spotlight: Street Fist 2

Today’s Greenlight standout was very hard to choose. There were some great looking games such as Zheroes and The Lost Valleybut there was just something about Street Fist 2 that really stood out to me. With an art style reminiscent to Freedom Force or even older titles such as Comix Zone, Street Fist 2 attempts to create an interesting visual experience. Beat-em-ups, or brawlers if you prefer, were one of the most popular genres of games during the arcade and early console eras. Games like Streets of Rage, Maximum Carnage, and Ninja Warriors led the charge when it came to the genre, providing fun and satisfying brawling experiences. Street Fist 2 has a long way to go before it can stand up to the greats of the genre, but from what we’ve seen, they seem to be on the right path.

Street Fist 2 features standard brawling gameplay, which they are describing as fast-paced and combo-based. As any fans of the brawler genre will know, the majority of the games do not feature in-depth combat systems. Games like Streets of Rage 2 had very few combo attacks, and it was up to you to figure out how to make use of the attacks that you had access to to defeat enemies that increased in difficulty. I would go as far as to say that the lack of depth in brawlers is part of their charm. Brawlers are supposed to be dumb and brainless games that you can button mash and enjoy. They are meant to be short experiences, usually less than ten levels, that you can replay over and over again while still being able to enjoy the gameplay. Street Fist 2 features both a fairly simple combat system and a small amount of levels. The game features 8 levels in all, ranging from the slums to tropical island environments. With an apparently 90’s inspired soundtrack, we can only hope that it will be as good as the soundtracks of the old school brawlers were. I still remember tracks from X-Men, Streets of Rage 2, and Turtles in Time to this day, so hopefully Street Fist 2 will include some equally memorable tracks.

Street Fist 2 will also feature two player co-op, which is a necessary staple of the brawler genre. Brawlers are one of the most beloved genres of gaming, especially to those of us that grew up with the SNES and Sega Genesis systems. Street Fist 2 has a lot to live up to, but it definitely is looking to be off to a solid start.
