Obsidian loses co-founder

Chris Avellone, who served as the co-founder and creative director of Obsidian Entertainment, has left the company. Founded in 2003, Obsidian and Avellone have worked on many games such as Fallout: New Vegas,  Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic II, Pillars of Eternity and South Park: Stick of Truth.

“I have officially left Obsidian Entertainment to accept a sudden offering as the Defence Against the Dark Arts Professor at Hogwarts.” Avellone said on Twitter. “(The first part is serious, but much love and well wishes to my fellow devs, good folks and all.)”

Obsidian also wishes Avellone the best in his endeavors. It’s pleasant to hear Avellone and Obsidian are still on good terms about going separate ways (no one likes messy breakups after all). I, for one, am especially glad to hear he isn’t taking the position at Hogwarts, because the Defence Against the Dark Arts Professor has an abnormally high turnover ratio.

“On the future, I’m off to pursue new projects, but I can’t say anything more at this time beyond life is short, and the ideas keep growing,” Avellone said to Eurogamer.

Since there’s nothing specified, that means everyone has their speculations about where he’s going. Many fans of Obsidian Entertainment’s games know Avellone as a great writer for the RPG genre, so Bethesda, Bioware and inXile seem to be the popular matchups in comment sections. However, we won’t know for sure until any further announcements are made. But one thing’s for sure; unless you have a personal grudge against the man, we all wish him the best.
