Tales from the Borderlands episode 3: Catch a Ride, a (spoiler free) review
Continuing from where our fearless protagonists last left off, Tales from the Borderlands: Catch a Ride wastes no time in getting back into what makes the Borderlands series great: lots of shooting and lots of laughable moments. The big questions though, are whether or not returning players will remember what is going on and will new players starting from here be lost, an especially crucial question considering this is meant to be the middle of the series.
In both cases, there is a small recap intro that is intended to remind you of what happened in the previous chapters. Unlike the recaps in other Telltale games though, the recap in Tales from the Borderlands is a bit less effective due to the game’s nature. Fortunately, the new characters that are introduced in this episode are fairly self explanatory and the references to characters and events from earlier episodes are fairly minimal. In other words, the story is contained fairly well and you can probably keep track of what is happening throughout the chapter without too much confusion.
In terms of storytelling, Tales from the Borderlands: Catch a Ride is the most varied of the episodes released thus far, featuring the expected humor and action, as well as a bit of mystery and even a hint of drama. It also brings the group of protagonists to some of the more interesting and unique places in Pandora (though to be fair, in the main games you were likely more concerned with shooting things).
Unfortunately, due to the nature of the game (and the Borderlands series in general), it is probably for the best if you wait for all the episodes to come out and play the series as a whole rather than wait for a couple of months at a time for each new episode. This is especially true considering Catch a Ride’s place as the climax of the story.
Final verdict-While the Catch a Ride episode itself is excellent, it is best to wait for the rest of the Tales from the Borderlands series to be released so that you can play it as a whole.
