One thing that is interesting about modern gaming is the introduction of digital downloads. Before, games existed in a purely physical format. Once a game ceased production, there were a finite number of copies left. If you weren’t lucky enough to have bought a game while it was out, you had two options. Scrounging up a second hand copy, or not being able to play it. Digital downloads have been able to bring classic games back from that abyss however. In fact, the most recent game to be revitalized for the modern age is Red Faction.
Red Faction is a first person shooter that was released back in 2001 for the PS2. A revolutionary shooter for the time that added quite a bit to the genre. It was one of the first games to have destroyable environments. Players could force their way through the terrain instead of taking direct approaches. Coupling that with a wide variety of weapons and vehicles to use, the game received quite the warm reception when it was first released. It gave players a plot focused on overthrowing a corrupt corporation on Mars, and the tools with which to do it.
Red Faction has been re-released before this point. A PC and a Mac version of the game have been released and are available on Steam. However, there will always be the problem of hardware limitations. Not everyone will have access to the same consoles or PCs as everyone else. As such, reaching out to multiple platforms will always give developers access to more players. There may very well those interested in Red Faction who own a PS4 but not any other platforms. Those people will now finally have a chance to play Red Faction. It is currently being sold for $14.99 on the Playstation Network.
