Some of Capcom’s video game franchises, including Street Fighter, have already been adapted for the big screen, and more are expected to follow.
The Hollywood Reporter has revealed that Legendary has acquired the “film and TV” rights to Capcom’s classic fighting series Street Fighter, which debuted in arcades in 1987 and laid the groundwork for the fighting genre with the release of Street Fighter II in 1991, just in time for the release of Street Fighter 6 later this year.
In the future, Legendary “will collaborate with video game company Capcom,” so says the source.
In 1994, a live-action film adaptation of Street Fighter was released. Even though it starred big names like Jean-Claude Van Damme (Guile), Kylie Minogue (Cammy), and Raul Julia (Bison), it bombed with viewers and critics. 20th Century Fox tried again in 2009 with Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li. It bombed commercially and received negative reviews.
This comes after the success of recent movie and TV adaptations of other popular video games like Sonic the Hedgehog, Super Mario, Uncharted, and The Last of Us. Sony is also part of Legendary’s current film distribution agreement.
