The free to play game World of Tanks is ready for pre-download on Xbox One, with the full game coming out on July 28th. Downloading now will grant you a small, in-game bonus when the game comes out. As a part of the bonus, you can get your hands on the Tier 2 (out of 10) T1E6-X1 light tank, as well as an exclusive emblem. The tank itself was a prototype U.S. Army light tank that was developed shortly after the end of the First World War.
The Xbox One version of World of Tanks will be one of the few console games where you can play with people across console generations, letting you play with your friends who are on the Xbox 360 version of World of Tanks. Since your progress is linked to your Gamertag, you can also switch between the two consoles with all your unlocks intact if you wish. Needless to say, if you already played World of Tanks on the Xbox 360, your stats and unlocks will carry over to the Xbox One version. Unique to this version of World of Tanks though, are the four Proving Grounds game modes where you can take the fight to AI enemies.
World of Tanks on the Xbox One is a port of the fairly popular and successful PC game where you can take control of various real, prototypical, and experimental tanks from the era between the first World War and the beginning of the Cold War. Gameplay revolves around working together with the 14 other people on your team while you try and use the terrain on the map to your advantage. As a result, matches can be very slow, as people from both teams hunker down behind hills and rocks to try and out-snipe everyone else. Alternatively, matches can also be over within minutes if one team can exploit the weaknesses in the other team’s defenses.
Like most other free to play games though, World of Tanks starts out fairly easy and grind free, but once you reach a certain point the game becomes very grindy to encourage you to buy into the microtransactions. Furthermore, you will be put into games where you are inherently at a disadvantage, oftentimes against players who can be two levels above you. That being said, World of Tanks is a free game, so there is no harm in trying it out.
