Android L gets new build and more hints regarding its actual name
The Android L developer preview for the Nexus 5 and Nexus 7 was released a while ago, but we haven’t heard much news regarding any updates for it. The latest version of the operating system is scheduled to launch later this year so we’re likely to hear about all the features only when the final build is out. However, according to Android Police, there’s evidence that a new Android L preview build called LRW66E was released on September 4th. This build contains some new features and also gives us a hint regarding the actual name of the OS. As you may or may not know, Android L is just a placeholder name and we can expect the real one to be revealed only close or during its launch.
Traditionally, all major Android versions were given the name of something sweet and were released in alphabetical order. For example, the current version is KitKat, while the previous one was called JellyBean and the one before it Ice Cream Sandwich. It was believed that Android L will go by the name ‘Lollipop’, but now it seems that this may not be the case anymore. Aside from the build number LRW66E, we can also see a reference to the name LMP. This probably hints at something along the lines of Lemon Meringue Pie or Lime Meringue Pie. Besides Lollipop, Lemon Meringue Pie was the second most common name used by various media outlets that tried to predict the actual name of Android L. Below you can find the mentioned evidence, which was found in the Chrome bug tracker.
The Nexus 5 running on Android L LMP LRW66E also features a new version of Google Play Services. This new version along with updates to the Gmail icon, Wi-Fi and signal strength icons, Bluetooth visibility and more appear to have been added with the latest build. Unfortunately there’s still no news regarding a release date for Android L so all we have for now are little bits of info here and there. We’ll let you know as soon as we learn some more details so stay tuned.
