Project Ara will have its very own version of Google Play Store

Google is well known for going out of their way to offer new and innovative products. One of their more recent ones is a modular concept smartphone that goes by the name of Project Ara. The project is definitely very interesting in theory as it basically allows you to build your own smartphone with the use of various modular components. Now it seems like the search giant finally plans to take it to the next step and allow customers to see how it works in practice. To make things a little easier for potential customers, Google announced that it will create something similar to the Google Play Store specifically for Project Ara.

“By following the Android model, we are creating a free and open platform,” Project Ara director Paul Eremenko said in a recent interview at Purdue University. ”The Ara MDK is free and open and available to everybody, so everybody could create a module per the specifications of the developer’s kit and put it in the Ara module marketplace, which is analogous to the Google Play store, and sell directly to consumers.” A store like this will be of great help not only to people who are looking to build their own Project Ara smartphone, but also to developers who want to try their hand at creating components for the device.

One would assume that a concept handset such as this will end up costing quite a bit, but Google actually plans to make the phones accessible to a wide variety of customers ranging from those who are looking for a high-end smartphone to those who can settle for a low-end one. The company managed to keep the Nexus line affordable all these years so presumably they can do the same with Project Ara as well. Google announced last month that Project Ara will run on a modified version of the Android Lollipop operating system. More details regarding the price of individual modules and release date are expected to arrive in the near future.
