Beta Coming Soon to PlanetSide 2 on PS4

Speaking to Eurogamer, Creative director for Sony Computer Entertainment Matt Higby announced that PlanetSide 2 on PS4 would be getting a beta. The game hasn’t received many updates since its announcement in the Summer of 2013. Higby explained the reason behind the lack of updates and a release date, saying that the team is working on making the game feel like a PlayStation 4 release instead of a simple port from PC. Also due to the PC controls of mouse and keyboard not transitioning to PS4, they have had to rework the entire layout and design of controls and menu space to accommodate for the new controller format. Higby shared, “As much as it sounds like we’re blowing smoke, we’re working hard to release a game that feels like a full-on console experience and not just like a port,”

Speaking further about the differences between PlanetSide 2 on PS4 and PC, he discussed how transactions will work on the PlayStation 4. Instead of using real money to purchase “Station Cash” you’ll be obtaining what is called “Marketplace Cash” which is the same term used for DC Universe Online’s currency system. The visuals are planned to be as good or better than the PC version and Higby mentioned how the focus is on the CPU and not GPU in order to accomplish this goal. The goal frame-rate is to have it stable, and whether it ends up being 60 or 30 FPS is up in the air. However the game will be running at 1080p resolution for those who are interested in only the highest end resolutions. Both platforms won’t feature cross-play since updates have to go through an extra update process on the PlayStation 4 side, and character transfers could be seen as unfair to new PlayStation 4 players who haven’t spent any time or money on the game yet.

PlanetSide 2 on PS4 was listed as one of the hundred games Sony stated was coming to the console in 2014. However, like many other games on the list, it appears to be a 2015 release, with only the Beta now being promised to come in 2014. PlanetSide 2 on PC is approaching its two year anniversary, as it was released on November 20th, 2012.
