EVE Online Gets Rid of Industry Teams

EVE Online is a massive space simulation MMORPG by CCP Games. Today the developer announced that they will be removing industry teams from the game by next year.

Game developer CCP has announced that they will be removing industry teams from EVE Online, as the system has been underused since implemented into the game earlier this year. On the EVE Online Dev diary, CCP had this to say: “Since Crius we have been closely tracking all related industry metrics and dials and it is apparent to us that usage of teams has been very low relative to the goals we set for it–with single figure percentage use in manufacturing jobs and near nonexistent use in research.” Industry teams had allowed gamers to hire out NPC characters to assist in industry jobs. The feature will be “methodically removed” over the coming months, although players will be able to use industry teams until they are forcibly retired.

Originally released on the PC in 2003, EVE Online has reached over 500,000 subscribers. In the game, players are able to explore a galaxy containing 7,800 star systems, which can contain moons, planets, stations, wormholes, asteroid belts, and complexes. Players in EVE Online can participate in a number of in-game professions and activities, including mining, piracy, manufacturing, trading, exploration, and combat. Combat can be both PvP and PvE. Characters advance based upon passively training skills in real-time, even while offline.

The game is set 21,000 years in the future, when humans have exhausted Earth’s resources and began colonizing the rest of the Milky Way Galaxy. This expansion led to competition of resources, but everything changed when a wormhole leading to an unexplored galaxy dubbed “New Eden” was found. Many colonies are established, and a structure is built to stabilize the wormhole, named “EVE.” Eventually the wormhole collapses, separating the colonies from Earth. Over the millennia, the colonists survived and rebuilt their own societies, but the memories of humanity’s origins and the knowledge of Earth and the Milky Way are lost.

EVE Online is available on PC.
