Mortal Kombat X welcomes back Kung Lao and introduces a faction system

The new fighter to join the Mortal Kombat X roster was initially meant to be revealed later today in the latest issue of GamesMaster Magazine. However, there seems to have been a slight chance of plans. Another magazine that goes by the name of Pelaaja was apparently able to feature the character first and they revealed that it’s everyone’s favorite Shaolin hat-thrower, Kung Lao. Interestingly, it appears that GamesMaster was supposed to have exclusive coverage on the fighter, so this news comes as a bit of a surprise. The Finnish magazine Pelaaja was not only able to reveal that Kung Lao will be playable in Mortal Kombat X, but they even showed a picture of him and talked about his three variations.

Creative Director Ed Boon himself seemed a bit surprised that we already know about this, as seen from the tweet above. In the magazine, Kung Lao sits beside a few other characters we all know and love from the previous games, namely Quan Chi, Goro, and Raiden. In addition, Pelaaja also talks about some of the new Mortal Komba X fighters like Kotal Khan and Cassie Cage. As for Kung Lao, he seems to have aged considerablysince we last saw him in MK9. This is not surprising though, as the upcoming game takes place in the future and spans over 25 years. The monk also seems to have changed his style quite a bit and will apparently sport a more dangerous throwing hat and goatee in Mortal Kombat X.

His three variations will include Tempest, Buzz Saw, and Hat Trick, all of which are expected to come with their own unique attacks and moves. The other Mortal Kombat X fighters also come in three variants, but Kung Lao will reportedly feature “the biggest ones yet” according to the magazine. The publication also revealed that at the start of the game players will be able to choose between one of five different factions: Lin Kuei, White Lotus, Brotherhood of Shadows, Special Force and Black Dragon. “Basically each team gathers so called “battle points” for their team, which decides how the game’s menus look both in single and multiplayer. This way each player contributes to the entirety whether or not you prefer the social aspects or playing by yourself,” the magazine adds. Mortal Kombat X is scheduled to be released on April 14th for PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, Xbox One, and the PC.
