Motorola Moto G 2014 Android Lollipop 5.0.2 update starts rolling out
We all know Motorola’s popular budget-oriented G line, a smartphone line that continues to amaze by showing just how much a user can get without spending a small fortune on a flagship, high-end device. Besides offering a great bang for the buck, the 2014 version of the Motorola Moto G also comes with one distinct feature – it offers its owners a front-row seat when it comes to software updates. The Moto G 2014 was the first to get Android Lollipop 5.0 (this is region-based however, some users, especially in Asia, still only having KitKat 4.4.4 support for their device), even ahead of Google’s own Nexus line-up, which is not something we’re used to seeing. History seems to repeat itself, as the Moto G 2014 is also the first smartphone to receive the official Lollipop 5.0.2 update, at least in the U.S.
The Android Lollipop 5.0.2 update has beginning rolling out, but is currently limited to the XT 1033 model of the Motorola Moto G. As with all official firmware updates, this roll-out is gradual, and from what we can tell, it’s a slow process for now. This is likely done by Motorola in order to ensure that the update is safe and bug-free, and in the event this isn’t the case, to give the company a chance to rectify issues prior to everyone installing the new firmware. The new OTA’s official software version is 22.21.28, and U.S. users should start seeing update prompts to it over the next few days, based on carrier and location. If you haven’t received a prompt to update your phone’s operating system just yet, wait it out – it’s certainly coming, but it might take a few days.
The update is 39 MB in size, and if you’re impatient about waiting for an official prompt and have a rooted device, you can manually download and instal the 22.21.28 update by grabbing it here. There is no official change-log available for now, but given that this is a relatively small-sized update, expect minor bug-fixes and stability improvements. In fact, that’s what the Android Lollipop 5.0.2 update is all about. For bigger changes, we’ll have to wait for the official Android Lollipop 5.1 update, which is expected to land by the end of February. Have you gotten the new OTA for your Moto G 2014?
