Iphone 5S and 5C become cheaper as the iPhone 6 release date draws near
We’re getting closer and closer to the release of the highly anticipated iPhone 6 release date. Apple’s upcoming flagship is keeping both iOS and smartphone enthusiasts in general interested, with rumors and speculation bursting everywhere online. Based on most sources, Apple’s iPhone 6 is expected to launch in September, more specifically on the 19th. This of course applies to the phone’s initial 4.7 inch version, with the premium 5.5 inch iPhone 6 coming sometime later this year, most likely in November.
The signs that the iPhone 6’s launch date is drawing near were further reinforced by Walmart. The company revealed that it will be reducing its prices for the iPhone 5S and iPhone 5C, signaling that it’s ready to lower its stock of the current generation of iPhones in anticipation of Apple’s upcoming launch. The iPhone 5S is thus reduced by $50, costing $99 at the retailer with a two year contract. The lower-end iPhone 5C is also getting a price reduction, costing $29 with a two-year contract. These discounted prices are for the 16 GB versions of the phones, with pricing for the 32 GB versions still to be unannounced. Walmart did previously have similar discounts for these phones, but this time, the price reduction is permanent. When retailers are trimming the prices of current generation phones, it’s usually because of an imminent launch for newer models. This is most likely the case with Walmart too.
The iPhone 6 promises to bring a great deal of improvements over previous models, such as an improved display (nothing specific has been confirmed yet, but sources indicate that the iPhone 6 will feature a 4.7 inch, 960×1704 resolution display with an estimated 416 PPI), a new CPU in the shape of a 64 bit A8 processor, 2 GB of RAM and a complete redesign. Still, that doesn’t make the iPhone 5S or 5C obsolete. While the iPhone 5C is obviously an entry-level phone in Apple’s line-up, the iPhone 5S is more than capable of handling modern apps, and will also be getting the new iOS 8 (recently revealed by Apple), which still makes it a worthwhile acquisition. If you don’t want to wait for the iPhone 6 or simply want a good deal, Walmart’s new pricing for the 5S and 5C seems good enough. If you do want to pick up one of the two with a contract, we’d recommend the iPhone 5S. For the $60 difference between the 5S and the iPhone 5C, you’ll be getting much more out of the former.
Apple is also expected to release several other devices this fall, including the iPad Air 2, iPad Mini 3 and a new MacBook Air. This means that previous models from the company, such as the iPad Air or iPad Mini 2 will most likely get similar price reductions in the coming weeks.
