Atari is rebooting “Alone in the Dark” and “Haunted House”

Atari is rebooting its famous horror games, Alone in the Dark and Haunted House. The company announced that re-imagined versions of the two classics will be released this autumn for the PC. More information and demos of these games will be revealed by Atari during PAX Prime.

According to its promotional website, the first game, “Alone in the Dark: Illumination” is being developed by a studio called Pure FPS. The original game was developed in 1992 by Infogrames and released for the PC. It was the first ever 3D survival horror game, acknowledged by Guinness World Records. The most recent addition to the series came out in 2008 on PC, Playstation 2 and 3, Xbox 360 and Wii.

The “Haunted House” reboot is being developed by the Italian studio Dreampainters, who also created “Anna”, a horror game released on the PC. Atari released the original “Haunted House” in 1982 for their Atari 2600 console. This game is known as one of the earliest examples of the survival horror genre. In 2010, the company released a sequel which kept the same name as the original game and which came out on PC, Wii and XBOX Live Arcade.

According to Atari, the other games that they will show at PAX Prime are: “Minimum”, “RollerCoaster Tycoon: World”, both for PC and “RollerCoaster Tycoon 4 Mobile”. The games will be available for limited private demonstrations that can be scheduled through the company’s website. For now, this is all the information the company has revealed about their upcoming games. “Haunted House” and the new “Alone in the Dark” are expected to restore Atari’s position in the horror games market. Reviving its classics was not an unexpected move from the company, considering the success of games such as “Outlast” or “Amnesia: A machine for pigs”, which proved that the horror genre is still alive and has a strong fanbase.
