Destiny takes the crown as the most successful new IP launch in the UK

Some of us were truly amazed by the amount of hype surrounding Destiny, especially since the game generally only got average reviews from critics. However, this didn’t stop millions of people worldwide from purchasing Bungie’s latest title and helping it become even more popular in the process. Destiny was particularly well received in the UK where it managed to become the most successful new IP launch of all time, a title previously held by Watch Dogs according to official figures released by Chart-Track. Worth mentioning is the fact that these only include physical copies so digital downloads were not taken into consideration.

The figures also reveal that 46% of the Destiny copies were sold for the PS4, 36% for the Xbox One, 14% for the Xbox 360 and only 4% for the PS3.  The PS4 had a couple of advantages here as Bungie made a deal with Sony to offer timed exclusive content on the console. Moreover, all advertising rights were also given to them so Microsoft couldn’t even advertise the Xbox One and Xbox 360 versions of Destiny. Still, combined they can account for 50% of the copies sold, which is definitely not bad at all. But as mentioned, these figures are only for physical copies so the percentages might be a bit different if the digital ones were also taken into consideration.

In the UK Destiny is now followed by The Sims 4 in terms of sales while Watch Dogs sits on the third place. Immediately after come Call of Duty: Ghosts, The Last of US: Remastered, Minecraft: Xbox 360 Edition and NHL 15. The last three positions are occupied by Plants vs Zombies: Garden Warfare, Minecraft: Playstation 3 Edition and Naruto Ultimate Ninja Storm Revolution. Interestingly enough, the highly acclaimed Titanfall is nowhere to be found among the top 10 games so I guess the folks over in the UK were not that impressed with it.
