New Photos of Bloodborne’s Chalice Dungeon

Masaaki Yamagiwa has shared some new photos of Bloodborne’s Chalice Dungeon. Yamagiwa, Producer for Sony Computer Entertainment Japan Studio, who are publishing Bloodborne, took to the PlayStation Blog to offer more details and some screenshots of the upcoming game’s newest feature. The Chalice Dungeon was first shown at the PlayStation Experience in Las Vegas during the convention’s keynote. There a gameplay demo was shown that explained the basics of the dungeon. The setting of each Chalice Dungeon is far below the main game’s city of Yharnam. Players access the dungeon via “holy chalices.” However, each time you access the dungeon it will be different from the last time you entered in both layout and enemy presence. Yamagiwa stresses that the feature will bring a lot more depth and additional content to the main game. In past Souls titles the player was only given one predetermined world to explore, but with the Chalice Dungeon every player has access to new content every time they enter.

Some of the themes of the dungeon include oily swamps and gothic hallways. This fits with the new time setting of Bloodborne, which leaves the dark medieval fantasy for a more Victorian 1800’s era. The dungeon is also full of traps designed to kill any who enter as well as “protectors” who are pale skinned and black eyed beings who hunt you down as you progress through the Chalice Dungeon. Also present are “protector ritual masters” who if allowed to perform some form of spell will most likely leave you dead. Lastly is the ancient guard dog, who have a petrified exterior that is constantly aflame. The new photos of Bloodborne’s Chalice Dungeon can also be found below.

The new photos of Bloodborne’s Chalice Dungeon are exciting for fans of the Souls series because it means you will have replayable content supplementing New Game+. It will also help with the wait for inevitable expansion content like we saw with Dark Souls II.
