Xiaomi Redmi 2, an affordable behemoth, officially launched
The Xiaomi Redmi 2 is the newest affordable handset launched by the Chinese company, as promised by company president Lei Jun last week. Lei Jun said that they would launch a new flagship in January, and followed-up with the Xiaomi Redmi 2, a mid-range smartphone bordering high-end flagship specs. The handset’s biggest pull-factor is its price, which is set at $119, a steal considering the good innards featured.
The Xiaomi Redmi 2 is a small smartphone featuring a 4.7 inch Sharp HD IPS display with a 1280*720 resolution, adding up to 312 ppi pixel density, which is pretty decent for its size. All those pixels will be powered by a 64 bit Snapdragon 410 CPU and Adreno 306 GPU, which should make it pretty fast and snappy. A 4G LTE modem is also included in the package, not to mention a decent 8 MP camera on the rear and an average 2 MP camera on the front. All that will be backed up by 1 GB RAM and 8 GB internal storage. The handset will also feature a 2200 mAh battery and dual SIM slots, which is no surprise for a Chinese handset.
Android 4.4 KitKat is the current operating system running the show, with MIUI on top, but Android 5.0 Lollipop should hit the device soon enough so that we can truly take advantage of the 64 bit chipset embedded in the phone. Since 64 bit smartphones are currently all the rage in the smartphone market, the Xiaomi Redmi 2 should be an attractive option for those on a low-budget who still want decent performance and top-notch software solutions.
The handset isn’t a design innovation, measuring 134*67.2*9.4 mm and weighing 146 grams. Nonetheless, you get to choose from quite a few color options, including green, yellow and pink. The Xiaomi Redmi 2 can be pre-ordered in China and will be commercially available starting January 9th, but international customers can get it from Oppomart, too. Even though it is out of stock at the international retailer at the moment, we are expecting to see a re-stock later this week.
