The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening is being recreated in 3D
We live in a time where fan projects can end up matching or even surpassing the games they were based on. The Sonic, Mega Man and Zelda fanbases in particular are constantly developing and releasing interesting creations like Mega Man Unlimited, Ocarina of Time 2D or Sonic Megamix. One of these projects is a year-old hack of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time called Link’s Awakening 64, a complete recreation of the Game Boy classic The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening using the Ocarina of Time engine and developed by zelda fan Tyrone Anderson.
Link’s Awakening 64 is a remake of Link’s Awakening that wants to include most of its original features like the eight dungeons, the entire map of Koholint Island, or the classic Link design. But it also wants to give the game its own original spin, the trailer says it will include “Original enemies, new temples, new dungeons, and a more inspired storyline than ever before” as well as an original soundtrack made by youtube user lezg_g, which definitely sound ambitious and worthy of attention. In a year of development Mr. Anderson has managed to make a new Link model, the classic zelda enemy bokoblins, and the entirety of Mabe Village.
Im kind of worried about Link’s Awakening 64, it could be one of those fan projects that manages to release after years of development and it turns out great (like Another Metroid II Remake and Pokemon Uranium) or it could be a fan projects that gets a DMCA or the developer loses interest halfway through development (like the Metal Gear Solid remake and Card Sagas Wars). Its a massive ammount of work and it worries me that Mr. Anderson gets burned out due to literally transfering and building a 3d game out of a 2d format.
