Top 5 BEST RPGs On Nintendo Switch

In just over two years the Nintendo Switch has already built up an impressive library, with just about every genre being accounted for. This of course is thanks to the fantastic job that Nintendo has been doing in churning out excellent first-party titles, but the vastly improved third-party support has really put things over the edge for the console.

With so many great games to choose from, we wanted to focus on one genre in particular with this article: RPG. The genre has enjoyed something of a rebirth in recent years, and some of the best games on Switch happen to be from this very genre. Without further ado, we’ve picked out the five best RPGs on Switch for you to check out if you haven’t already.

Fire Emblem: Three Houses

The latest installment in the Fire Emblem series launched this year, and it is yet another winner for this increasingly-popular strategy RPG series. It’s actually the first entry in series to release for a home console since Radiant Dawn in 2007, with the series instead being exclusive to Nintendo’s handhelds with the likes of Awakening and Fates. This one has the player choosing between three nations and guiding them through a series of battles. The tried and true turn-based tactical gameplay is once again front and center, though this game also adds in some social and time management elements.

Octopath Traveler

For those of you looking for a nostalgic RPG experience, then look no further than this game from Square Enix. The game garnered most of the attention it got thanks to its gorgeous artstyle, which blends retro character sprites with polygonal environments and HD effects. The game itself puts you in control of one of eight adventurers, and you’ll play through each character’s story as their paths eventually intertwine. If you’re looking for an experience that is both fresh and familiar, you can’t go wrong with this one.

Xenoblade Chronicles 2

It didn’t seem like the Xenoblade Chronicles series would go on to become a very successful and enduring one for Nintendo, but here we are. After the phenomenal original game that launched on Wii and the follow-up that launched on Wii U, the series returned for a third installment in as many Nintendo consoles. The open-world gameplay and gorgeous visuals and music is front and center again, with many hours of gameplay to dive into. Once you’re finished with the main game you can check out the standalone DLC called Torna: The Golden Country, which many consider to be even better than the base game.

The World Ends With You: Final Remix

While this game originally came out in 2007, the fact that we’re still talking about it today should say something about its quality. This action RPG from Square Enix features an awesome artstyle, which Kingdom Hearts fans will find familiar. The game has you control Neku Sakuraba and his allies as they are forced to take part in a game that will decide their fate. While the game was originally designed with the DS’s two screens, the Switch Port has been tweaked to accommodate for the different hardware. The frantic and addictive gameplay is better than it has ever been, and is well worth checking out on Switch.

Final Fantasy VIII Remastered

Seeing as it’s the 20th anniversary of its release and it just launched for the first time on modern hardware, now is as good of a time as any to recommend the recent remaster of Final Fantasy VIII. While often considered to be the black sheep of the series, in my opinion it stands toe-to-toe with the series’ very best and is easily one of the best games of all time. This remaster of the game touches up the game’s visuals and makes some quality of life improvements, making this easily the definitive edition of the game. It’s definitely of a bygone era, but if you want to relive the 90’s JRPG glory days or want to see what all the fuss is about, you should absolutely check out Final Fantasy VIII.
