Skullgirls Encore coming to PlayStation 4
Fighting game Skullgirls Encore is set to release on the PlayStation 4 and PS Vita later this year according to the official PlayStation blog. Lab Zero Games, the developer behind the title, has not given any official release date yet, simply stating it should arrive at some point in 2014. The PlayStation blogs describes the new versions of the game as being complete, with the ports including “all of the DLC characters, stages, and story funded by Lab Zero’s Indiegogo campaign, as well as ‘All Play’ multiplayer lobbies and an extensive art gallery.” The post also revealed the it will be playable on PlayStation TV, supporting local multiplayer with PlayStation 3 or PlayStation 4 controllers. We can also expect to get more information on a release date and pricing soon.
Skullgirls originally released in 2012 for the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and PC. Although the 2D fighter received plaudits from most critics and was commercially successful, the future of the game was put in doubt due to a lawsuit between developer Revenge Labs and another party. This led to the whole development team behind Skullgirls eventually being laid off. After a successful crowdfunding campaign on Indiegogo, the ex-employees formed Lab Zero Games to continue working on the title in the future with additional content and DLC.
In December, Skullgirls again faced problems with publisher Konami requesting that it be removed from the PlayStation Network and the Xbox Live Arcade. This came about as a result of the developer parting company with Konami due to difficulties in publishing DLC. Skullgirls was removed from the online stores on December 31 but was later re-listed under the new title of Skullgirls Encore, with PlayStation 3 buyers getting a free copy of the new game. Skullgirls Encore included the original game along with a number of improvements and fixes.
