Blizzard hints at a possible World of Warcraft sequel
During Gamescom 2014, WoW game director Tom Chilton was asked if Blizzard ever considered making “World of Warcraft 2”. He replied positively, stating that “It’s something we have talked about. It’s something we have talked about for ten years”. There would be certain obstacles to overcome for such a project, as Chilton himself explained: “I think that there are a lot of challenges there in seeing how World of Warcraft 2 relates to World of Warcraft; do they live alongside each other, does one feed into the other, what is that product, etc. These are challenges that have to be figured out before that becomes a reality.”
It remains to be seen how Blizzard handles all these challenges and whether WoW 2 will eventually become a reality. For now, their goal for the WoW universe is to release expansion packs on a yearly basis in order to keep their players and to bring new players to the game. The latest expansion, coming out in November, just in time for the game’s 10 years anniversary, “Warlords of Draenor”, will bring important updates to the game, such as improved character models.
It makes sense for Blizzard to attempt to bring a sequel to WoW, considering the fact that the game has started to decline since 2010, when it had 12 million subscribers.
In the present, there are only 6.8 million subscribers, which is nearly half the number of gamers that were bringing profits to Blizzard when the MMORPG was at its peak. One explanation for this decrease might be that the developer hasn’t released anymore expansion packs since 2010’s “Mists of Pandaria”. That Blizzard might start working on WoW 2 soon is also supported by the fact that, on their official website, they state that they are hiring people for some yet “unannounced games/projects”. It remains to be seen what these projects are, but, leaving speculation aside and considering Chilton’s statement, a World of Warcraft sequel is a strong possibility.
