Star Wars Battlefront 3 leaked gameplay shows up on YouTube

This is not the Battlefront you’re looking for

At this point, I think we’re all aware developer DICE and publisher Electronic Arts are currently hard-at-work on the next entry in the Battlefront franchise, which will simply be called Star Wars: Battlefront. But before these two, developer Free Radical (now known as Crytek UK) was working on its own sequel to the popular multiplayer-focused third/first person shooter set in the Star Wars universe. Sadly, that project was cancelled for unknown reasons. Now, thanks to YouTube channel Chr0m3xMoDz, a brand-new gameplay from Star Wars Battlefront 3 got leaked.

As can be seen above, Star Wars Battlefront 3 would have included both ground and vehicle combat, in addition to a single-player campaign mode. Of course, this being a very early build (being tested on the Xbox 360), the frame-rate is pretty terrible and the game looks mostly unfinished.

In May 2013, EA obtained exclusive rights to develop Star Wars games for gaming consoles, and its subsidiaries DICE, Visceral Games, and BioWare started work on Star Wars games. DICE first acknowledged the game at Electronic Arts’ E3 2013 press conference, along with a teaser trailer. The game is built using the Frostbite 3 engine; studio-head Patrick Söderlund stated the game would be “DICE’s interpretation of what Battlefront should be”, while still incorporating elements from the previous two games. As such, DICE did not brand the new game as a sequel to Battlefront II, but a reboot of the franchise. Söderlund said the game almost wasn’t developed, but that staffers at DICE lobbied to be given the project; he called DICE’s development of Battlefront “a match made in heaven”. In June 2014, it was revealed at EA’s E3 2014 press conference the planet Hoth and the moon Endor would be playable maps for the game.

Star Wars: Battlefront is scheduled for a 2015 release, on the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC.
