Super Smash Bros. Sets Wii-U Preorder Record

Super Smash Bros. has set a preorder record for the Wii-U, according to Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime in an interview with Bloomberg. However, Mr Fils-Aime failed to provide a specific sales figure. So far, Super Smash Bros. has gone on to surpass the preorder figures for Mario Kart 8, which eventually managed to go on to sell 3.5 million copies, according to Mr Fils-Aime. While Super Smash Bros. may have set a record for preorders, it is important to note that preorders aren’t necessarily the best way to measure purchasing intent.

Mr Fils-Aime also said in the interview with Bloomberg that he hopes that the sales of Super Smash Bros. will help boost the sales of the Wii-U, which has been severely lagging behind the PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Xbox 360, Xbox One and PC, effectively meaning that Nintendo are set to lose the so called ‘console wars’. Speaking to Bloomberg, he said: “The launch of Mario Kart 8 has essentially doubled our Wii-U sales year-on-year. Our expectation is that the sell-through for Smash is going to be very strong, certainly on par with what we saw with Mario Kart 8. We think the impact on hardware will be similarly dramatic.”

Characters for the upcoming release of the game will include Rosalina and Bowser Jr. from the Mario series, Mega Man, Pac-Man, Lucina and Robin from Fire Emblem Awakening, and Shulk from Xenoblade Chronicles, as well as characters which have appeared in previous entries in the series. Additionally, Mewtwo from Pokemon is scheduled to be released as a downloadable character in early 2015. Characters from the Miiverse are also scheduled to appear. You can watch the trailer for the characters below. To date, 7.29 million Wii-U systems have been sold, and Super Smash Bros. will be released for the Wii-U on November 21. The game was originally announced at E3 2013.
