Hatsune Miku: Project Mirai DX Gets Delayed

Hatsune Miku’s 3DS debut has been delayed from a May 26 release date to a September 8 in North America and September 11 in Europe.

Hatsune Miku: Project Mirai DX will be Miku’s first appearance on Nintendo 3DS after several successful outings on PlayStation platforms. The Project DIVA series did quite well across the PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Vita, and fans were delighted to hear that the adorable little pop star and her friends would soon be popping out of 3DS screens.

However, in a blog post published earlier today, SEGA confirmed that the title will not release next week, but rather in September. There is no mention of why the delay has occurred, though many theories have been introduced.

Delays are quite common in video games, and it really shouldn’t be surprising given that both Mortal Kombat X (for last-gen consoles) and Batman: Arkham Knight, two much more high-profile games, also saw recent delays. The difference here is the timing. Exactly a week before launch, SEGA has decided to delay the game. This surely leaves a sour taste in the mouth of those who have recently pre-ordered the game or even those who have just been excited about the title (myself included).

As something of an apologetic gesture, SEGA has announced a limited launch edition for the North American version of the 3DS game, which is bound to upset many Miku fans who live elsewhere. From SEGA’s official blog post:

“This launch edition of Hatsune Miku: Project Mirai DX will include the game, premium outer box packaging, and a 3-foot wallet chain designed after Hatsune Miku’s iconic belt – a simple and stylish way for fans to represent their love for Miku. All copies of the game will include 19 double-sided augmented reality (AR) cards that show off additional dance moves and costumes.”

SEGA goes on to describe the already announced tap and button modes, as well as the ability to customize virtual apartments for the singers (an element previously featured in the Project DIVA series). Players can also create their own dance routines and song arrangements using Dance Studio and My Tune, and these creations can be shared by exchanging Profile Cards via StreetPass.

The launch edition looks pretty cool, but is a wallet chain and a few AR cards enough to make up for a four month delay? Let us know what you think in the comments, and keep checking back with Load The Game for the latest gaming news.
