Nintendo Switch Outsells Wii in the US
Nintendo’s Switch just passed a sales milestone. The hybrid system’s global hardware sales surpassed Wii sales some time ago, but the US has updated.
Circana (formerly the NPD) reports that Switch lifetime sales have “finally” surpassed the Wii in the US. The hybrid system achieved this in July 2023 after six years on the market. IGN says “49 million were sold in the Americas” without sales data.
GamesIndustry.biz says Switch’s “lifetime sales now trail Xbox 360 by less than one million units” in the US. Nintendo’s latest system is “fewer than five million” from the PlayStation 2 in the same market.
Its strong first-party game library drives Switch’s success. The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom and Metroid Prime Remastered and Pikmin 4 have helped system sales in 2023. Later this year, Super Mario Bros. Wonder will release.
As of June 30, 2023, Nintendo’s website reports that the Switch has sold over 129 million units, while Wii sales are limited to 101 million.
Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is the best-selling Switch game, selling 55.46 million units. The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is the fourth best-selling game with 30 million sales, and Tears of the Kingdom is the ninth with 18 million.
