New LG G Watch image leaks shortly before unveiling

The LG G Watch is expected to be announced at the upcoming Google I/O developers’ conference, which is scheduled to take place during 25-26 June. An image of the smartwatch was recently uploaded anonymously on Imagur and shows that the device will feature an app which allows it to communicate with smartphones via microUSB. The uploader didn’t reveal any details about the device, but the picture suggests that the LG G Watch will run on Google’s Android Wear operating system. We’re not seeing the “LG” logo anywhere, but the display does read “G Watch” so I guess we’re looking at the real thing.

An earlier leak revealed that the smartwatch will feature a 1.6-inch touchscreen with 280 x 280 resolution. Under the hood we can expect to find 512MB RAM, 4GB of storage, and a Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 chipset. The LG G Watch will also come equipped with a 400 mAh battery said to last for up to 36 hours in standby mode, which can be fully recharged in only 2 hours. Sources claim that its external measurements should be something along the lines of  37.9 x 46.5 x 9.95 mm. LG confirmed earlier this year that the G Watch will cost €199 in Europe. The company didn’t say anything about a U.S. price, but it is assumed that it will end up costing around $199-279.

The LG G Watch will most likely compete with Motorola’s Moto 360, which will be released later this year. The two smartwatches are said to come with similar specs, however the 360 will feature a circular design and stainless steel housing. Most people believe that this will be the superior device, but as you might expect it will also come with a higher price tag. In any case, it’s always good to have options and it seems that we will have plenty in the near future.

The LG G Watch and Motorola Moto 360 might not be the only wearable devices at this year’s Google I/O. Word on the street is that Samsung is planning to announce their own Android Wear smartwatch at the conference. Details are still scarce at this time, but it is rumored that the smartwatch will be similar to the second generation Galaxy Gear and the Gear 2 Neo. Additionally, it is believed that this device will come in two varieties, one that uses Samsung’s own chips and one built off of processors from Qualcomm.

It looks like we’re in for a very exciting developers’ conference this year. Check out this page if you want to see the full schedule and remember to stay tuned for more news and updates.
