Shovel Knight Theme Available on 3DS This Week

Shovel Knight is a hit indie game developed by Yacht Club Games. The game was released earlier this year, across several platforms. Now, a new 3DS theme based off of the game will be available to 3DS owners this week, Yacht Club Games has announced.

Dubbed the “International Theme,” owners of a 3DS can pick up this Shovel Knight theme starting November 27th. This is the second theme based off of the side-scrolling platformer, as the first was available in Europe when the game was released in the region earlier this month. As with all other 3DS themes, the Shovel Knight International Theme will change the Home Menu’s backgrounds, icons, colors, and music.

Released at the beginning of summer this year, Shovel Knight revolves around a shovel wielding knight. After an evil Enchantress rises to power, Shovel Knight takes up his shovel and aims to defeat her, and to hunt for his lost beloved. Much like the Mega Man games that Shovel Knight takes inspiration from, there are 8 evil bosses dubbed “The Order of No Quarter.” Players use a sharpened shovel to attack enemies, dig up items, and destroy barriers. Players can also use the shovel as a pogo stick, and bounce off obstacles and the heads of enemies.

Originally released on PC, Shovel Knight has been ported over to the Wii U and 3DS. The 2-D side-scroller features 8-bit graphics meant to replicate the games that helped inspire the title. The color schemes of the game match the original color palette of the NES, and the graphics include visual touches such as parallax scrolling.  The game also features a chiptune soundtrack, including two tracks by Mega Man composer Manami Matsumae. The game was funded by a very successful Kickstarter campaign, more than reaching its original goal. The title released to critical acclaim, with many critics applauding the gameplay and difficulty.
