Homeworld Remastered to Release in February
Fresh out of PAX South, Gearbox has announced an HD remake Relic’s classic RTS game, Homeworld. Set to release on February 25th, Homeworld Remastered will include the original Homeworld 1 and Homeworld 2, along with the remade versions set to include new recordings from the voice cast, remade cinematics, a remastered score, new models, new textures, new special effects, along with support for HD, UHD, and 4K resolutions. The collection will not include Homeworld: Cataclysm, however.
The collection also grants access to the Homeworld Remastered Steam Multiplayer Beta—a combined online version of both Homeworld games. “Competitive multiplayer modes for Homeworld and Homeworld 2 have been joined to offer players access to races, maps and game modes from both games in one integrated multiplayer experience,” Gearbox explain on the game’s official page. Multiplayer Beta will be available to anyone who pre-orders the game before February 24th. Gearbox explains how the game was painstakingly restored after obtaining the IP from THQ after they filed for bankruptcy in 2012. The game’s textures were smoothed out, and all the code was updated with key members of the original development team. The game will launch in Beta since it combines code from over 15 years ago with newly-written changes, and Gearbox will be update the game based on fan feedback.
In addition, Gearbox Software has paired with Blackbird Interactive – a studio founded by Homeworld veterans Rob Cunningham and Aaron Kambeitz. The team plans on creating an all-new entry in the game’s series for PC. The game, which is set to be titled “Homeworld Shipbreakers,“ is set to take place before the events of the first Homeworld and serves as a prequel to the series. The game will not come with the Homeworld Remastered collection, and will instead be released at a later, unknown date.
Homeworld Remastered will launch in Beta on the 25th of February, with the option to pre-order the collection on Steam for $34.99, currently $29.74 with a 15% pre-order discount.
