Outlast Free With Xbox Live Gold
The horror game from Red Barrels originally released for Windows on September 4, 2013, to rave reviews. It was ported over to PlayStation 4 in February of 2014 and Xbox One a few months later in June. Outlast has sold four million copies across all platforms as of October 2016, and those who have yet to experience the first-person thriller (or seasoned fans migrating from other platforms) can do so for free starting today if they download the game through Xbox Games With Gold.
Outlast follows the story of Miles Upshur, a freelance journalist who receives an anonymous tip about horrible inhumane experiments going on at a private psychiatric asylum owned by the extremely shady Murkoff Corporation. Gamers be wary, however, as Outlast is not a game for the faint of heart and those easily disturbed. The game is known for its extreme gore, violence, and visceral horror that can turn even the strongest stomach.
Players experience the journey through the (not so) abandoned asylum through the eyes of Miles who, armed only with a camcorder, has no choice but to run and hide if he wants to survive. Like many horror games, Outlast makes use of a creepy and foreboding darkness to keep the player on edge. Most of the game is spent stumbling through a darkness illuminated only by the eerie green light on his video camera. An interesting twist is the use of batteries as a resource. Be sure to look for batteries wherever you can, or you may find yourself with no choice but to scramble blindly through the pitch black halls.
Those looking to scare themselves further after completing their trek through Mount Massive Asylum should look into Outlast’s critically acclaimed DLC, Whistleblower. Experience the events leading up to Miles’ adventure by learning the story of Waylon Park, a software engineer working at Mount Massive Asylum. Outlast for Xbox One will be available free December 16, 2016, through January 15, 2017, for those with Xbox Live Gold.
