Majora’s Mask 3D Includes Improvements

Eiji Aonuma, series producer for the Zelda series, recently talked to Famitsu about the upcoming Nintendo 3DS game, Majora’s Mask 3D (the interview was translated by Siliconera). The remake has been asked for by the internet at large for quite some time now, so naturally Famitsu’s first question was about when Nintendo decided to begin working on Majora’s Mask 3D. Aonuma spoke about Shigeru Miyamoto mentioning that the game would be easier to play, since you could put the system into sleep mode. Aonuma also admitted he had some troublesome memories related to development of Majora’s Mask and was at first against the remake. However, after dwelling on it and talking to Grezzo, co-developers with Ocarina of Time 3D, the team began working on Majora’s Mask 3D.

The plan with Ocarina was to deliver it in the same timeframe as the Nintendo 3DS, which gave the development of the remake a rushed feeling. With Majora’s Mask 3D, however, they have been able to take their time. Upon release in spring of 2015 for Japan,it will be almost four years after Ocarina 3D’s release. With that time they have been able to make small changes to the game. Some of those include making game mechanics easier to understand, and the dialogue behind their explanations less repetitive. He also mentioned that a boss fight has been changed, “Upon trying a boss fight on the original version for the first time in a while after playing the remake, it’s like, ‘how do I beat this guy again?’ it’s that type of content.” The team has also learned from last year’s Zelda game, A Link Between Worlds, and will be including updated touch controls in Majora’s Mask 3D. The last thing Aonuma revealed was that the ability to go fishing in two ponds has been added. He acknowledges that fishing isn’t exactly something someone would do as the moon slowly approaches the earth, but points out that its intentional.

Majora’s Mask was a direct sequel to Ocarina of Time on the Nintendo 64, and released in April of 2000. Since Ocarina of Time was remade and released on the 3DS, it was heavily rumored that Majora’s Mask would also be remade for 3DS. This expectation is due to the two games sharing the same engine. It was not until November 5 that Nintendo finally announced Majora’s Mask would be remade for the Nintendo 3DS.
