Motorola Moto X 2014 getting Android 5.1 update next week

Owners of Motorola smartphones are well aware of the advantages the brand brings. Along with Google’s own Nexus line, the Motorola phones are among the first to get important OS updates for Android, and this seems to be the case once again with the company’s flagship phone, the 2014 version of the Moto X (2nd gen). The popular phone will be receiving the highly anticipated update to Android 5.1 next week, although which areas will enjoy the first batch of roll-outs remains to be seen.

Motorola has announced that it will start releasing the new firmware in Brazil first, with the United States following early to mid next week. There are no details regarding a release in Europe as of yet, but we can expect the update to land in the EU by mid-May. Motorola’s spokesman, Mr. David Shuster, has previously stated that the Moto X 2014 will be skipping Android 5.0.2 and will be gunning straight for the 5.1 version. Google is already working on releasing Android Lollipop 5.1.1 to its Nexus phones, fixing any potential leftover bugs unresolved by the core 5.1 version.

The 5.1 version will primarily address basic Lollipop issues, ranging from common bugs to battery drain and connectivity issues. In Motorola’s version, the company said that the new firmware will also address problems with Moto Display and Moto Actions. Still, since Motorola’s version of Android is as close you can get to core Android, there won’t be drastic UI improvements or changes. The update will be quite significant, so if you get a prompt to update your own Moto X next week, make sure you’re on a wireless network to avoid additional mobile data costs.

Last, but not least, Motorola has announced that the new firmware will eventually make its way to older phone models, including the 1st generation Moto X.
