Verizon’s Galaxy Note 2 to get Android 4.4.2

Verizon is not known for rolling out updates ahead of the other big US carriers so this can be considered a big deal. Samsung started to roll out the Android 4.4.2 update for the Samsung Galaxy Note 2 starting with France and slowly made its way to other carriers around the world. In the US, Sprint was the first one to offer the Samsung Galaxy Note 2 the Android 4.4.2 update. Until today, it was also the only carrier to offer the update for the Galaxy Note 2 users in the United States.

Verizon announced today the Android 4.4.2 update for its Samsung Galaxy Note 2 devices. The Over the Air update seems to be ready to hit all Note 2 users across the US. The new KitKat update will bring a lot of new features to the Samsung Galaxy Note 2 as you can see from the change-log provided by Verizon:

  • Support for Samsung KNOX 2.0
  • Dual Persona
  • TIMA Real Time Kernel Protection
  • Trust-Zone based ODE
  • Universal MDM Client and Samsung Enterprise Gateway
  • Knox Generic VPN Framework
  • Error code popups fixed in Backup Assistant
  • ‘Search’ icon has been removed within S Memo when there is no memo
  • Favorite ‘Contact’ information background is now more readable
  • Connectivity has been improved when streaming music
  • Stability has been improved for Samsung Gear Manager
  • Text alert improvements for select factory installed car kits

Other changes concerning widgets:

  • Google Drive
  • Photos
  • Play Newsstand
  • Emergency Alerts App Icon
  • S Suggest (has been removed)
  • Samsung Music (has been removed)

The new update will also bring Galaxy Gear 2 compatibility to the Samsung Galaxy Note 2. It will combine some Verizon tweaks and features from the Android 4.4.2 software. The other major carriers, AT&T, T-Mobile and U.S. Cellular did not confirm their release date plans. As with the Verizon update, users can expect the roll out to star soon after the announcement.

So far, this is the second Android 4.4 KitKat update for the Samsung Galaxy Note 2 in the US but we don’t know if this will be also the last update the Note 2 will receive. Google usually offers 18 month of software support while Samsung offers 24, as the Samsung Galaxy Note turns 2 years soon it might not get any new updates in the future.
