PS4 sales quickly approaching 20 million units according to Sony

PS4 sales are now almost 20 million strong according to the latest figures released by Sony Computer Entertainment. Okay, so maybe they still to sell about 1.5 million more consoles to reach that number. Specifically, the company recently revealed that more than 18.5 million units have already been sold as of January 4th, 2015. Those are definitely a lot of sold units but even more impressive is the fact that the PS4 is only a little over a year old, which means that these latest figures actually make it the fastest selling PlayStation console to date. Unsurprisingly, a lot of those systems were sold during the holidays, which Sony considers to be between Black Friday and January 4th. The company managed to sell about 4.1 million consoles during this period, a figure that’s actually lower than many have predicted.

It’s no secret that Sony faced a lot of competition these last couple of months from Microsoft and their Xbox One, which is why PS4 sales ended up being a bit underwhelming during the holidays. But be that as it may, the numbers are still pretty impressive and mark a considerable increase compared to September 2014 when they were sitting at about 13.5 million. Speaking of figures, Sony also revealed that some 10.9 million users subscribed to PlayStation Plus at some point during the period ending on January 2nd, 2015. “We will continue to reinforce and deliver additional value on PS4 as the best place to play, by bringing even more exciting content and by enriching our wide array of service offerings,” Andrew House, President and Group CEO said in a press release.

Finally, the company revealed that more than 81.8 million PS4 games have been sold digitally and at retailed, combined, as of January 4th, 2015. The number of copies sold during the holidays was 17.8 million. What’s interesting here is that in 2014 we didn’t have a whole lot of exclusive titles, and yet, the sales were very impressive even so. This year, the great sales are expected to continue, especially with PS4-only games like Bloodborne, The Order: 1886, and Uncharted 4 just around the corner.
